Lobsters played a significant role on Indigenous culture throughout the coasts of New England and Canada. The journals of early colonists explain that strong tides would wash piles of lobsters ashore, sometimes these piles were 2ft deep! They were abundant and were often used for fertilizer by coastal tribes that also farmed. The lobster is adorned in floral and corn patterns to represent that important role.
